The Woodford R. Porter Scholarship recognizes and supports students who have achieved at high levels in the classroom, and demonstrated a deep and consistent commitment to serving others, with a passion for communities that embrace belonging and access. This scholarship seeks to honor individuals who not only volunteer their time and talents for the benefit of others, but also work actively to promote understanding, empathy and collaboration across differences in thought, perspective and life experience.
We believe service rooted in compassion and inclusivity has the power to transform both individuals and communities. Therefore, this scholarship celebrates those who lead with empathy, listen with openness, and work with integrity to make meaningful contributions to their schools, neighborhoods and beyond.
- Kentucky or Southern Indiana (Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Perry, Scott and Washington Counties) resident
- Minimum 3.5 cumulative weighted GPA
- No ACT/SAT score requirement
- Demonstrated, consistent record of service to others through school-based activities, community organizations or personal initiatives

- Submit a student-involvement resume. View the resume scoring rubric.
- Submit an essay*.

*Essay Prompt:
Reflect on the importance and impact of a community service initiative listed on your student involvement resume. How has this influenced your appreciation for diversity in thought, perspective, and life experiences? How have your service activities contributed to the betterment of your community or society at large? What have you learned about yourself and others through these experiences?
In your response, we invite you to share specific examples that illustrate your leadership, empathy, and commitment to community-building. Your story should reflect how service has shaped your worldview and how you’ve helped foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for those around you.
